LED Freezer Lighting

Energy efficiency is a key concern for large operators of refrigerated warehouse space, and these operators continually monitor energy usage by their building systems. Typical lighting systems in these
environments are based on high-pressure sodium, metal halide or high intensity fluorescent lamps. Because of the extreme temperatures, these systems normally operate continuously and are unable to react to the environment’s low occupancy rates. To partially address this opportunity, some companies have tried applying occupancy sensors to multi lamp fluorescent fixtures. However, these installations still require a portion of the fluorescent lamps to run continuously, using the ballast and lamp waste heat to warm the fixture, so it can turn on when it senses occupancy.
Groom Energy engineers applied a newly introduced LED based lighting system designed specifically for these environments. In spite of the extreme temperatures, this system produces higher levels and quality of light than the existing systems, while still allowing for 5-minute interval occupancy sensing and switching. Thanks to this intelligence, operating hours can then be reduced from 8,760 per year to fewer than 1,000 hours per year.
